chess rules
A classic, contemplative board game of strategy.
- Pawn: Moves 1 square forward (or 2 from starting line). Captures diagonally. Automatically promotes to Queen at the end row.
- Rook: Moves horizontally or vertically any number of squares.
- Knight: Moves in an "L" shape (2 squares in one direction, 1 square perpendicular). Can jump over pieces.
- Bishop: Moves diagonally any number of squares.
- Queen: Combines moves of Rook and Bishop.
- King: Moves 1 square in any direction. Castles with Rook if neither has moved.
- Castling: King moves 2 squares towards Rook; Rook jumps over King. Path must be clear and King must not pass through check.
- En Passant: Capture an opponent pawn that just moved 2 squares by moving diagonally behind it.
- Winning: Checkmate the opponent's King.
